Started in Huntsville, Alabama, Civil Axe Throwing now operates four indoor axe throwing experiences throughout the south including Memphis and Birmingham. Chattanooga is the latest incarnation, and it’s already taken off like a rocket.
Civil Axe Throwing Chattanooga owner Jorge Lima says, “Ax throwing is up and coming and catching a lot of fire. Most people don’t realize that it’s an established sport and there are competitive ax throwers all over the world.”
It’s intended to be a competitive group activity. The site encourages visitors to join their eight-week league so budding axe throwers can hone (sharpen?) their skills among friends. No previous experience is required.
Beginners can choose between two options: a one-off axe throwing experience to see how they like it, or an ongoing, competitive (but friendly) league.
Either way, newbies are provided an axe to start, then a dedicated AXpert (their words) will show them the ropes — er — handles. Like throwing darts, axes are tossed at 2×10 wooden boards with players aiming at circular targets. Complete matches are three rounds with five axes thrown each round — best of three rounds wins.
It’s deceptively simple, but incredibly addictive!
